Craola is definitely one of those artists that you can follow for years and always be surprised by his innovative surreal aesthetic from paintings to vinyl toys. This past weekend at Gallery 1988, he did a live exhibition that was no doubt an honorable experience for those who were able to witness it.

Darren Romanelli, a.k.a. Dr. Romanelli, a.k.a. DRx, is a Los Angeles based designer who is known for bringing retro clothing back to life. Since 1999 the doctor, by his fictitious name, has used his scalpel to reconstruct retro jackets and other apparel into customized one off pieces. Romanelli says, “When I look at a piece of vintage, there’s that energy that captured the essence of those years.” Now a full service designer, Romanelli is intimately involved with all levels of a project’s development, from inception to display to promotion. His theory behind his vintage inspirations is, “If there’s a story there, I want to flip it and introduce it in a new way to the world.”

Barry McGee is a San Francisco based painter and graffiti artist. He is also known by pseudonyms Ray Fong and Twist, as well as variations of Twist such as Twister, Twisty and more. His work is heavily inspired by a pessimistic view of urban experience, which he describes as. “urban ills, over stimulations, frustrations, addictions & trying to maintain a level head under the constant bombardment of advertising”. McGee’s paintings are very iconic, with central figures dominating abstracted backgrounds of drips, patterns and color fields.
